Mount Rinjani 2D1N Second Summit Trek – A Unique High-Altitude Adventure in Lombok

The Mount Rinjani 2D1N Second Summit Trek is an exciting high-altitude adventure for hikers seeking a rewarding challenge and breathtaking scenery. Reaching Mount Sangkareang (3,126 meters), the second-highest peak in the Rinjani massif, this unique trekking route offers an unforgettable experience beyond the traditional crater rim hikes.

Perfect for adventurous travelers, this trek combines dramatic mountain landscapes, peaceful wilderness, and incredible panoramic views while avoiding the busy classic Rinjani routes. If you’re looking for a less crowded and more authentic hiking experience in Mount Rinjani National Park, this trek is an excellent choice.

Discover a Less Crowded Side of Mount Rinjani

Opened in 2022, the Rinjani Second Summit Trek follows a newer and less-traveled trail leading to Mount Sangkareang. Unlike the popular Sembalun and Senaru routes, this adventure takes you through quiet forests, open alpine ridges, and untouched mountain scenery with very few trekkers along the way.

The peaceful atmosphere, fresh mountain air, and unspoiled landscapes make this one of Lombok’s best hidden trekking experiences for nature lovers and experienced hikers.

A Challenging 2 Days 1 Night Adventure

The Mount Rinjani 2D1N Second Summit Trek is designed for hikers with good physical fitness who enjoy challenging mountain adventures. The trail includes steep climbs, rocky paths, exposed ridges, and demanding elevation gains, making it one of the most challenging short treks in Mount Rinjani National Park.

Although physically demanding, every step rewards you with spectacular scenery, tranquil surroundings, and the satisfaction of reaching one of Lombok’s most impressive viewpoints in just two days.

Breathtaking Views from Mount Sangkareang

At 3,126 meters above sea level, Mount Sangkareang offers one of the finest panoramic viewpoints on Mount Rinjani. From the summit, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Lombok Island, the turquoise coastline, the Gili Islands, and the surrounding volcanic landscape.

During sunrise and sunset, the scenery becomes even more magical as golden light illuminates the mountains while the majestic silhouette of Mount Agung in Bali rises across the sea. It’s a perfect destination for photographers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an unforgettable mountain experience.

Day 1: Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim

Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Jou Trekking Guesthouse to the entrance of Mount Rinjani National Park in Senaru. After a short registration and briefing with your guide, you’ll set off on one of the most scenic forest trails in Rinjani.

The first part of the hike follows a shaded path beneath towering tropical trees, where the sounds of birds, flowing streams, and forest wildlife create a peaceful atmosphere. As you gain elevation, the trail becomes steeper, offering an enjoyable challenge while your guide sets a comfortable pace with regular breaks for water and snacks.

Around midday, you’ll stop in a quiet forest clearing to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch by your porter team before continuing the climb through the upper rainforest. As the vegetation gradually changes, glimpses of the surrounding mountains begin to appear, signalling your approach to the crater rim.

By mid-afternoon, you’ll arrive at Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m), one of the most spectacular viewpoints on Mount Rinjani. From the campsite, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Segara Anak Lake, the active Barujari Volcano, towering crater walls, and, on clear days, the distant coastline of Lombok.

After your tents are prepared, relax with a hot drink while watching the colours of sunset transform the volcanic landscape.
