Day 1 – Senaru Village to Crater Rim Camp (2,641 m)
Your trek begins in Senaru, a quiet village nestled on the northern slopes of Mount Rinjani and widely known as the starting point for rainforest routes. The first day is all about gradually gaining elevation as you move from cultivated land into dense tropical forest, where the air is cooler and the surroundings feel untouched and alive with nature.
Trek Overview and Terrain
Today’s route is a steady uphill hike that combines shaded jungle paths with a more demanding final ascent. The lower sections are relatively gentle, while the last part of the day becomes steeper and more rugged. Although challenging at times, the changing scenery keeps the journey interesting from start to finish.
07:00 AM – Check-in and Departure
Start your morning at the Senaru trekking office for registration and a quick introduction to your guide and porter team. After a short briefing, you’ll set off along a path that passes through local farms before transitioning into the shaded rainforest trail.
09:00 AM – Break at Post 1 (915 m)
After a steady climb, pause for a short rest under the forest canopy. This is a good moment to rehydrate and enjoy some light refreshments while listening to the sounds of the jungle.
11:00 AM – Stop at Post 2 (1,500 m)
Continue along the trail as the forest becomes thicker and more humid. At Post 2, take another break to recover your energy before the next section of the hike.
12:00 PM – Lunch at Post 3 / Mondokan Lolak (2,000 m)
By midday, you’ll reach Post 3 where your trekking team will prepare a warm lunch. Take time to relax, enjoy fresh fruit and hot drinks, and recharge before tackling the afternoon climb.
01:30 PM – Final Climb to the Crater Rim
Leaving Post 3, the terrain begins to change. The trail becomes steeper, with exposed roots and rocky sections requiring a bit more effort. Your guide will keep a comfortable pace, allowing regular breaks as you gain altitude. As you get closer to the top, the forest starts to thin, revealing your first views into the vast Rinjani caldera.
03:30 – 04:00 PM – Arrival at Senaru Crater Rim Camp (2,641 m)
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the crater rim campsite, locally known as Plawangan Senaru. This is your home for the night and one of the most scenic viewpoints on the mountain.
What You’ll See from the Crater Rim
From camp, you can take in incredible panoramic views, including:
- The deep blue Segara Anak Lake resting inside the caldera
- The active cone of Mount Baru Jari rising from the lake
- On clear days, the outline of Mount Agung visible across the sea in Bali
As the sun begins to set, the landscape transforms with warm colors spreading across the sky. Afterward, your team will serve dinner at camp. Spend the evening relaxing, enjoying the cool mountain air, and taking in a sky filled with stars before resting for the night.
Day 2 — Crater Rim Sunrise, Segara Anak Lake & Propok Camp (2,300 m)
Day two brings you deeper into the dramatic landscape of Mount Rinjani, where every section of the trek reveals a completely different environment. From the panoramic crater rim to the tranquil lakeshore and up to a quiet mountain camp, this day is both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
Sunrise Over the Senaru Crater Rim
The day begins early at the Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m), just as the first light touches the caldera. Watching the sunrise from this vantage point is one of the highlights of the entire trek. The sky gradually shifts in color, illuminating the vast volcanic basin below.
From here, you’ll see Segara Anak Lake shimmering in deep blue, surrounded by rugged cliffs. On clear mornings, the silhouette of Mount Agung in Bali appears on the horizon, adding to the spectacular view.
After enjoying breakfast at camp, your guide will provide a briefing before the day’s descent begins.
Descent into the Caldera
At around 07:00 AM, the journey continues downward toward Segara Anak Lake (approx. 2,000 m). The descent usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on pace and trail conditions.
This section can be demanding, as the path is made up of loose volcanic gravel, uneven rocks, and narrow ridges. Careful footing is essential. Despite the challenge, the scenery is extraordinary—towering crater walls surround you, creating a sense of scale that makes Rinjani truly unforgettable.
Lunch Break at Segara Anak Lake
By late morning, you’ll arrive at the lakeside where your trekking team will prepare a freshly cooked lunch. This is the perfect time to relax, take photos, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
The lake’s unique color and the presence of Mount Baru Jari, an active volcanic cone rising from its center, make this one of the most iconic views on Rinjani.
Relaxation at the Hot Springs
After lunch, a short walk takes you to the natural hot springs near the lake. These mineral-rich waters are known for their soothing properties and offer a well-deserved break after the descent.
Many trekkers take this opportunity to relax their muscles and recharge before continuing the climb.
Ascent to Propok Camp
At approximately 12:30 PM, the trek continues toward Propok Camp (2,300 m). This part of the journey involves a steady uphill climb across varied terrain, including rocky trails and narrow paths.
Along the way, you’ll pass Goa Susu, a small cave with cultural significance and interesting rock formations. In some steeper sections, simple ladders and handholds are available to assist trekkers.
As you ascend, the perspective changes once again—offering incredible views back over the lake and across the vast caldera.
Evening at Propok Camp
By around 05:00 PM, you’ll reach Propok Camp. Compared to the busier crater rim campsites, this area feels more remote and peaceful, making it an ideal place to unwind.
Enjoy a hot drink while your trekking team prepares dinner. As the temperature drops to around 10–12°C, the clear mountain sky often reveals a breathtaking spread of stars.
Get a good rest—Day 3 will take you through the beautiful Torean Valley, known for its lush scenery, rivers, and waterfalls.
Day 3 — Descent Through the Scenic Torean Valley
The final day of your trek leads you through the breathtaking Torean Valley, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful routes on Mount Rinjani. This section offers a refreshing contrast to the volcanic terrain, with lush forests, bamboo groves, rivers, and cascading waterfalls along the way.
Although the route is mostly downhill, certain sections are narrow and require careful footing, making this descent both exciting and rewarding.

Route: Propok Camp (2,300 m) → Torean Valley → Torean Village (601 m)

Trekking Through Jungle, Rivers & Waterfalls
07:00 AM – Begin the descent to Torean Village
After breakfast, start your journey down toward Torean Village. The trek covers approximately 10 km and usually takes around 6–7 hours to complete. While mostly downhill, the trail still requires energy, balance, and focus.
Leaving camp, the path gradually descends into the dramatic Torean Valley—one of Mount Rinjani’s most scenic natural corridors. Along the way, you will encounter narrow ridge trails carved into the valley walls, locally known as “jalan kurus” (the narrow path). Trekkers walk in single file here, and your guide will assist to ensure safety.
As you descend further, the landscape becomes greener and more tropical. The trail passes through bamboo forests, alongside flowing rivers, and near several small waterfalls. You may also walk through unique rock formations and shaded forest tunnels, adding to the adventure.
A major highlight of the day is the stunning Penimbungan Waterfall, which cascades dramatically across the canyon—one of the most iconic views on Mount Rinjani.
Lunch Break by the Riverside
11:30 AM – Lunch stop
Take a well-deserved break beside the river, surrounded by the soothing sounds of flowing water and forest wildlife. Your porters will prepare a warm meal, typically including fried rice or noodles, vegetables, and fresh fruit.
Final Stretch to Torean Village
12:30 – 01:30 PM – Continue descent
After lunch, continue the final stretch of the trek. The trail follows the river, crossing small bridges and passing through local farmland before reaching the trailhead at Torean Village (601 m).

Our Small-Group Mount Rinjani Trekking Experience
At Jou Trekking, we focus on delivering a more personal and enjoyable Mount Rinjani trekking experience by keeping our groups small and well-organized. This approach allows every hiker to fully enjoy the journey, with better support, flexibility, and comfort on the mountain.
Small Groups for a Better Experience
We intentionally limit the number of participants on each trek to maintain quality and safety. Most of our groups include 4–5 trekkers, with a maximum of 6 people per trip.
With fewer people, our guides can give more individual attention, adjust the pace when needed, and create a more relaxed trekking environment. This makes a big difference, especially on challenging sections like the summit push.
Friendly and Well-Balanced Groups
Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends, we carefully organize groups to ensure a good mix of participants.
Many of our guests come from different countries, creating a social and welcoming atmosphere. It’s common for trekkers to start as strangers and finish the journey as friends, sharing an unforgettable adventure together.
Professional Local Guides and Porters
Every trek is supported by a skilled local team with extensive experience on Mount Rinjani. Our guides are trained in safety procedures and mountain navigation, while our porters handle all logistics, including camping gear, food, and equipment.
This allows you to focus on the experience — enjoying the scenery, the climb, and the overall adventure — without worrying about the details.
Support Team Structure
We carefully arrange our team based on group size to ensure comfort and efficiency throughout the trek:
- 4 trekkers: 1 guide + 4 porters
- 5 trekkers: 2 guides + 5 porters
- 6 trekkers: 2 guides + 6 porters
This balanced setup ensures you receive enough support while maintaining a smooth and enjoyable trekking pace.

Climbing Mount Rinjani is not only about reaching the summit — it’s about the entire journey. From stunning crater views to the unique experience of camping under the stars, every moment is part of the adventure.
