Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Difference Between the 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim Trek and the 2D1N Rinjani Summit Trek?

The 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim Trek focuses on reaching the spectacular Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m), offering stunning views of Segara Anak Lake and Mount Barujari. The 2D1N Rinjani Summit Trek follows the Sembalun route and includes a sunrise summit climb to Mount Rinjani’s highest point at 3,726 m. The Senaru Crater Rim Trek is shorter, easier, and suitable for those who want incredible views without the demanding summit ascent.

The trek starts and finishes in Senaru Village. Hikers ascend through Mount Rinjani National Park’s tropical rainforest to the Senaru Crater Rim, camp overnight, and return to Senaru the following day via the same route.

Highlights include trekking through lush rainforest, spotting wildlife, camping on the spectacular Senaru Crater Rim, enjoying panoramic views of Segara Anak Lake and Mount Barujari, and experiencing a beautiful sunrise over the crater.

The trek is considered moderately challenging. While it involves a steady uphill climb of around 6–8 hours on the first day, it does not include the steep and demanding summit ascent, making it suitable for reasonably fit beginners.

Previous hiking experience is helpful but not required. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a positive attitude can complete the trek. Our guides will support you throughout the journey.

The trek usually begins around 7:00–8:00 AM after registration and a short briefing in Senaru Village.

Most trekkers return to Senaru Village between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM on the second day, depending on hiking pace and weather conditions.

Nighttime temperatures at the Senaru Crater Rim typically range from 8°C to 12°C. Warm clothing is recommended, especially during the dry season.

We recommend bringing hiking shoes, comfortable trekking clothes, a warm jacket, long pants, a rain jacket, sunscreen, a hat, personal medication, a reusable water bottle, and a small daypack

Porters carry all camping equipment, food, water, and cooking gear. You only need to carry your personal belongings in a small backpack. Personal porter services can be arranged for an additional fee if needed.

You can safely store any extra luggage at our office or guesthouse in Senaru while you are on the trek at no additional cost.

Before your Mount Rinjani trek, you’ll stay at Jou Trekking Guesthouse, our official meeting point for pre-trek briefings, equipment checks, and departure.

Guests can enjoy clean rooms, hot showers, and fast Wi-Fi before the adventure. For those booking a trek package without accommodation or transportation, Jou Trekking Guesthouse remains the official meeting point before the trek.
