Overview

Discover one of Indonesia’s most unforgettable adventures with a 3 days 2 nights trek on Mount Rinjani. Standing at 3,726 meters, Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in the country and offers a rewarding journey for those ready to take on both challenge and beauty in one trip.

This trek is designed for travelers who want the full Rinjani experience. Over three days, you’ll pass through a variety of landscapes—lush forest, open grasslands, and dramatic volcanic slopes—each offering a different perspective of the mountain. One of the most memorable sights along the way is the deep blue Segara Anak crater lake, set beneath the towering summit.

Your journey usually starts from either Senaru or Sembalun village, depending on the route. The first day takes you steadily uphill to the crater rim, where you’ll camp for the night. From here, you can enjoy wide views across the lake and surrounding peaks, especially at sunset.

The second day begins early with the summit attempt. The climb to the top is challenging, but reaching the summit at sunrise is a truly special moment, with views stretching across Lombok, Bali, and Sumbawa. After descending from the peak, the route continues down to the crater lake, where you can rest and enjoy the natural hot springs.

On the final day, the trek continues with a long descent back through changing landscapes, giving you one last chance to take in the beauty of Rinjani before returning to the village.

Highlights

  • Reach the summit of Rinjani (3,726m) and watch the sunrise above the clouds
  • Camp on the crater rim with panoramic views of the lake and mountains
  • Visit Segara Anak lake and relax in nearby hot springs
  • Experience a mix of forest trails, savanna, and volcanic terrain
  • Enjoy freshly prepared meals during the trek
  • Supported by an experienced local guide and porter team
  • Small group size for a more personal and comfortable experience

Day 1: Sembalun Village to Sembalun Crater Rim

Your Mount Rinjani trekking adventure begins with a transfer to Senaru, a peaceful mountain village on the slopes of Mount Rinjani. Spending the night here helps you relax, adjust to the altitude, and prepare for your Rinjani summit trek.

After an early breakfast, you’ll travel to Sembalun Village (1,100 m), the main starting point for most treks. At the Rinjani Information Center, you’ll complete your registration and meet your experienced guide and porters who will support you throughout the journey.

The trek starts with a gentle walk across the Sembalun savanna, a wide-open landscape known for scenic views and rolling hills. This section is a great introduction to trekking Mount Rinjani, as the trail gradually ascends to Pos 1 (1,300 m) and continues to Pos 2 (1,500 m), with short rest stops along the way.

From here, you’ll continue to Pos 3 (1,800 m), where you’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch break. This is the last relatively easy section before the climb becomes more challenging. In the afternoon, the trail steepens as you make your way toward the Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m). This part of the hike requires steady effort, but it is also one of the most rewarding sections of the day.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at the crater rim campsite—one of the most spectacular viewpoints on any Mount Rinjani trekking tour. From here, you can admire the stunning Segara Anak Lake, the active volcano inside the crater, and panoramic views across Lombok.

While your guide and porters prepare camp and cook dinner, you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The sunset at the crater rim is unforgettable, followed by a warm meal and a restful night under the stars before your summit attempt.

Day 2: Rinjani Summit Sunrise, Segara Anak Lake & Senaru Crater Rim Trek

Day 2 is the highlight of your Mount Rinjani trekking tour, combining the challenge of the summit with the reward of exploring the volcano’s most spectacular landscapes. It is the most demanding day of the 3 days 2 nights trek, but also the most unforgettable experience.

Your day begins before dawn at the Sembalun Crater Rim campsite. After a hot drink and light breakfast prepared by your trekking team, you start the summit hike of Mount Rinjani under a sky full of stars. The trail becomes steep and sandy, with loose volcanic gravel that makes the final ascent both physically and mentally challenging.

Reaching the summit at 3,726 meters in time for sunrise is incredibly rewarding. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across Lombok, Bali, and Sumbawa. Below, the massive crater reveals the stunning Segara Anak Lake, one of the most iconic sights in Indonesia.

After taking in the views, you descend carefully back to the crater rim where a well-earned breakfast awaits. The journey then continues down into the crater, following a rugged trail to the lakeshore. Here, you can relax, enjoy lunch, and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Nearby, the natural hot springs offer a perfect chance to soothe tired muscles after the early summit push. This is often a favorite moment for many trekkers.

In the afternoon, you climb steadily to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 meters). From the campsite, enjoy sweeping views of the crater, lake, and even Mount Agung in the distance on clear days.

The trail passes through lush rainforest, offering cooler temperatures, shade, and chances to spot wildlife like grey monkeys. Your guide will provide regular rest stops along the way.
